Poison cupcake challenge: rules, tips and how to play online
The poison cupcake challenge is a two-player bluffing game from TikTok. One person secretly “poisons” one cupcake on a plate, the other eats them one at a time, and the round ends the moment they bite the poisoned one. Nobody is actually poisoned: it is ordinary cake and a lot of staring. Below are the rules for playing it at home, the odds on every bite, the tricks that win it, and how to play it online with someone who isn't in your kitchen.
How to play the poison cupcake challenge at home
You need two people, a plate of cupcakes, and somewhere for one of you to wait. Chocolates work just as well, which is why the same game also goes by the name poison chocolate challenge.
- Put an even number of cupcakes (or chocolates, or sweets) on a plate. Twelve is a good tray.
- Player one leaves the room, or turns round and covers their eyes.
- Player two quietly chooses one cupcake to be "poisoned" and tells a third person, writes it down, or just remembers it.
- Player one comes back and eats the cupcakes one at a time. Player two says nothing until the poisoned one is picked, then shouts "poison!"
- Count how many player one ate before hitting it. Then swap: player two leaves and player one picks the poison.
- Whoever ate more cupcakes before finding the poison wins.
The at-home version has two weak spots. Someone has to leave the room every round, and you have to trust the poisoner not to change their mind when the other person goes for the cupcake they actually wanted. It also needs you both at the same table, which is no good if one of you is in another city.
How to play the poison cupcake challenge online
Poison Cupcake is our version for two phones, and it turns the challenge into a proper head-to-head game. Instead of taking turns being the poisoner, you both poison the same tray at the same time, each on your own screen, so nobody has to leave the room. Then you take turns eating. Bite into one of theirs and the round is theirs.
The rules
- A match is first to 3 rounds. The tray grows every round, and so does the poison: 12 cupcakes with 1 poison each in round one, 16 cupcakes with 2 poisons each in round two, 20 cupcakes with 3 poisons each from round three on.
- You never have to eat your own poison — unless the tray is down to nothing else, and then you do.
- There's a 25-second clock. Sit on a turn too long and a cupcake is picked for you.
- The poison is checked by the game, not by the other person, so nobody can quietly change which cupcake it was.
The four tricks
This is the sabotage part. You each get four tricks, each good once per match, played on your turn before you eat. Your opponent sees that you used one, but never where your poison went.
- Sniff: Check one cupcake for their poison. only you see the answer.
- Antidote: Survive the next poisoned bite you take this round.
- Second helping: They have to eat two on their next turn.
- Switcheroo: Quietly move one of your poisons to another cupcake.
The combination that decides most matches: your partner sniffs a cupcake, it comes back clean, and they save it for later. You saw which one they sniffed, so you play the switcheroo and move your poison onto it. Their sniff still says “fine”, because it tells you what the cupcake was like when they checked.
How risky is each bite?
You know where your own poison is, so you will only ever pick from the rest. Your risk on the first bite of a round is their poison divided by everything you would eat:
| round | tray | their poison | you'd eat from | first-bite risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12 | 1 | 11 | about 9% |
| 2 | 16 | 2 | 14 | about 14% |
| 3 and after | 20 | 3 | 17 | about 18% |
The risk goes up with every safe bite, because the poison stays on the tray while the safe cupcakes are eaten. In round one, by the time six cupcakes are gone, your next bite is about a one-in-five gamble. That is why the rounds feel calm for a minute and then very tense.
Five tips that win the poison cupcake challenge
1. Poison the one they want
Nobody reaches for the plain vanilla first. Put your poison on the cupcake with the cherry, the heart, or their favourite flavour — the one they will talk themselves into.
2. Sniff early, not late
A sniff checks a single cupcake. Early on the tray is big and the poison is spread thin, so one clean sniff buys a safe bite; late in a round, the cupcakes you would sniff are the ones you were going to avoid anyway.
3. Never sit on a clean sniff
Everyone sees which cupcake you sniffed, and your opponent knows whether it was their poison. If it came back clean and you leave it for later, expect a switcheroo to move their poison onto it. Eat it now.
4. Save the antidote for the scary rounds
It is once per match, not once per round. In round one the odds are about 9% a bite; by round three they start near 18% and climb as the tray empties. That is when an antidote earns its place.
5. Serve the second helping late
Making them eat two on a tray of twenty barely moves the odds. On a tray of six, with your poison still on it, it is often the whole round.
Forfeits for couples
Poison Cupcake works best as a game for couples when losing a round costs something small. Agree before the first bite:
- Whoever gets poisoned answers one question honestly, no skipping.
- The loser of the match picks nothing: the winner chooses the film, the takeaway, or the next game.
- Every poisoned bite earns a compliment from the winner. It is hard to stay sore about losing.
- Long distance? The loser posts the next real-life cupcake, or orders one to the winner's door.

What is the poison cupcake challenge?
The poison cupcake challenge is a two-player game from TikTok where one person secretly "poisons" one cupcake on a plate while the other is out of the room. The other person then eats the cupcakes one by one, and the round ends when they pick the poisoned one. Nobody is actually poisoned; it is a bluffing game played with ordinary cakes.
How do you play the poison cupcake game with two people?
Take turns being the poisoner. One of you picks the poisoned cupcake in secret, the other eats until they find it, then you swap. Whoever ate more before hitting the poison wins.
